Congratulations to our July 2009 class who are currently completing their home support practicum this week. You have all done an amazing job in completing your RCA/CHW program and your facility practicum comments and feedback have been outstanding. Congratulations to the two students who have already been offered employment based on your performance during your facility practicum. Keep up the great work and enjoy your new careers as Caregivers!

I would just like to congratulate the May 2010 class who have just finished their Home Support Practicum. You have all worked so hard, and now it is time to enter the world of the caregiving profession! We would be more than happy to give you a reference!

The full-time class is currently completing their theory classes, at the end of May they will be having their 2 month review. I have just marked their Palliative Care Exams and the class average was 90%! Way to go guys! The current module the students are working on is Culture & Diversity. The students worked on a self-reflective exercise and it was really interesting to hear about each student’s cultural backgrounds. We are planning a pot-luck on Monday after class to demonstrate how Culture is linked to food choices.

The Saturday class just finished off their Major Body Systems exam and they all passed. The next course they will be working on is Spinal Cord Injury. The Sunday class just finished their Personal Care Skills exam and the class average was 79%. Good Job! They will be completing their Mental Health & Alcohol and Substance Abuse Exam and will be given lecture on Palliative Care & Nutrition.

FYI: we are working to put together a formal graduation ceremony for all the students with start dates from July 2009 onwards up to and including the March full-time class. More information to follow!

This past week at Drake Medox College has been intensive for some students. The full-time students have just finished their Medical Terminology and intro. to Anatomy & Physiology module. They have been practicing hard by reviewing their flashcards on a daily basis. On Friday, their class was about Caring for individuals with Circulatory Disorders.

Today I taught the Saturday class which was all about Infection and Infection Control. The students practiced handwashing using a product called “Glo-Germ” which mimics bacteria on the skin. I then used a UV lamp to show them how well they washed their hands. I was amazed at how well the did! They just need to remember to scrub their fingernails and tips of their fingers really well! They also practiced using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and I managed to get a great group photo of them practicing, which will soon be posted on the photo collage that I will be putting together.

The Sunday class will be very busy tomorrow. They will have exams on Substace Abuse and Mental Health. Lecture will be on Palliative Care.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the new group of students who will be starting their training this Sunday. You have all chosen a challenging, yet very rewarding career.
